I believe all managers have faced this business case at least once in their managerial career. Probably the only exception is the newly appointed manager ...
Case study No. 6:
You are manager of a small department. It’s Tuesday and you are approached by your best employee with a request to allow her to take the next workday – off. You ask her what she needs that day for. After a short hesitation, she decided to be honest with you and she shares that she is going to an interview for a new job.
You're shocked. It comes immediately to your mind that losing your best specialist will seriously undermine your department results.
What will you do? The employee stands in front of you and expect your managerial decision.

You should remain calm no matter how surprising and unpleasant for you this information is. You are not prepared for an adequate proposal so a proper reaction would be: "I'm sorry to hear this very unpleasant news for me. I truly respect you very much! Submit your request for a day off. " Trying to keep any professional in the company is a must. Till the day after the interview do try to identify the reasons which led her to look for another job. Meet her and discuss what embarrasses her, but do not attempt to learn which company she applies to. Ask for another meeting in 2-3 days in which to make your proposal for keeping her in the company. If you can not keep her in the company protect the good human relations with her. It is very hard to find quality people nowadays.
